Drivers License Narcolepsy
Texas Medical Evaluation Process for Driver LicensingThe Department is responsible for maintaining the safety of all individuals who share the roadways in Texas. As a result, it is sometimes necessary to request information from you regarding certain medical conditions so that we may determine how it may affect your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The Department's Driver License Office Customer Service Representatives (CSR) are trained to evaluate applicants and conduct a basic investigation, if necessary. The CSR may ask additional questions, require a physician's statement, or require you to take a driving, written, and vision test. Based on the results of these tests you may be called back to the driver license office for further investigation. Medical Advisory BoardIf the investigation determines that you may have a medical condition that could affect your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, the Department will refer you to the state's Medical Advisory Board (MAB) for further evaluation.
I'm wondering if anyone else has lost their Drivers License due to their Narcolepsy and Cataplexy? If so did you appeal or did you ever get it back? I don't know what to do, I can't Not Drive. I work and have children that need to go places too! #160465 September 28, 2009 at 8:34 pm.
MAB is composed of a panel of licensed doctors appointed by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to review medical documentation relating to a person's ability to drive. Occupational Driver LicenseIf your driver license has been denied and/or revoked for medical reasons, you are not eligible for an occupational driver license. I can’t remember if this has been asked on this board.does anyone know if NJ is a state where your license can be revoked if you are diagnosed with narcolepsy? And if so, whose responsibility is it to notify the DMV? I’m feeling very angry right now.on a message board for NJ moms, there was a discussion about the woman on disability for depression who had her disability payments revoked after she posted pictures on her Facebook account of her on vacation. One of the responders recounted a situation at her husband’s company – a guy fell asleep on the job, then claimed he has narcolepsy. So the company gave him a desk job, but in the meanwhile, is investigating his claim with a private investigator.and then she mentioned the company is taking steps to get his license revoked. Thanks, yawningdog, for your reply.
I looked for info on NJ and narcolepsy and I couldn’t find anything definitive. I believe that I saw something about a doctor or a patient with narcolepsy can inform the DMV of the condition and it was possible that one would have to do the other test (can’t remember the name) whre they check your ability to function for a few hours after a night time sleep study (instead of monitoring naps on the MSLT)so I think NJ is and either/or state, depending on the patient. I couldn’t find anything definitive, though. I was just surprised when the woman mentioned the company was taking steps to have the man lose his license because it seemed to be more in spite (because they were being forced to deal with an employee with narcolepsy) rather than people who were actually concerned about his driving safely. NJ’s rules don’t specifically address narcolepsy. There is a question you have to answer about seizures, etc on the application. If your narcolepsy is pretty well treated, you can honestly answer “no” for the health issues.
If your doctor has concerns about your ability to safely drive, I think they are expected to notify the DMV. I would imagine the obligation & standards are higher for a commercial license. I know my daughter’s sleep lab does MWT for these issues.
My daughter is a high school student- her doctor encouraged her to get her permit. As a young driver, he is giving her some guidelines about driving long distances, when tired, etc.
All apart from the DMV. If he thinks her driving behavior is risky, I’ve no doubt he will notify the DMV. My advice would be to ask your sleep doctor, they should know what the rules are on this. I don’t know the rules for NJ, only for CA, but I would expect that it may be similiar.
Narcolepsy And Driving Laws
In CA when you get a license there is a form you have to fill out and you must list your medical conditions – i had no choice but to list narcolepsy. This delayed me getting my license because they had to review it but this was basically solved by a letter from my sleep doctor saying she is under my care and is okay to drive. I don’t know the rules, it is possible that somewhere it says that you must inform the DMV if you have such and such conditions- and if not then your license would be revoked. I don’t know, but i wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case. Like i said, i would ask your sleep doctor – send them an e-mail or give them a call if you have their number if your visit isn’t for awhile. I can’t say that i am 100% sure about this, but i would be shocked if narcoleptics couldn’t drive in all states as long as they have a doctor certify that they can do so safely and are under treatment. Just there may be a period of time when they have to review it i wouldn’t put off getting diagnosed though– if you do have narcolepsy, treatment is very important and for your own happiness and safety the diagnosis is important, as basically all meds used to treat it require a prescription from a doc (which requires a diagnosis).
